Laser hair removal and tattoos: yes or no?

Laser hair removal and tattoos: yes or no?

One of the most common questions you’ll encounter in your studio is about laser hair removal and tattoos. Is it dangerous? In this blog, we’ll tell you everything you need to know to offer the best recommendations to your clients and take care of their well-being and that of their tattoos.

Laser hair removal and tattoos: are they incompatible?

Laser hair removal and tattoos are not incompatible, but some recommendations must be followed. The first thing you should know is that you cannot perform laser hair removal on a tattoo, since the effect produced by this hair removal technique can deform the design or even eliminate it.

If you encounter these doubts in your studio, you should offer an alternative. For example, you can get a tattoo after waxing. It is highly recommended that you first remove all the hair and subject your skin to the treatment. After a few months, your skin is ready to be tattooed.

Recommendations before getting a tattoo

Some tips and recommendations related to laser hair removal and tattoos are:

Consider whether the tattoo will be placed on an area of the body where hair usually appears or not.

If the tattoo is done on a part of the body where hair grows, laser treatment is recommended first.

Wait until the last session before getting a tattoo. The skin has been subjected to a lot of stimuli, so it needs to be calmed and treated before moving on to the tattoo.

Consult a beauty specialist about the most appropriate skin care for each case.

Tattoos and piercings: is laser hair removal safe for “decorated” skin?

Smooth skin is a dream that can come true for women and men of all ages. The laser hair removal procedure can solve the problem of “shagginess”: sessions are completely safe (if done in a trusted company with a medical license), painless, and not “biting” in cost… And there are few contraindications – only a number of serious diseases, pregnancy, and so on, little things that will force you to postpone the course for a while.

But are all kinds of skin decorations contraindications to laser hair removal? For example, piercings and tattoos. Surprisingly, this is not often written about, so we took the liberty of conducting an educational program – and at the same time answering all the questions that arise!

Piercing and laser: are they “friends” with each other?

The answer is clear – no. All body jewelry consists of metals, and it does not matter whether they are precious or not. The fact is that the laser beam heats up the metals, so during the epilation process, scalding hot jewelry can lead, at best, to serious discomfort in the area where the laser is applied.

Laser and tattoo: are skin designs compatible with hair removal?

With tattoos, everything is much more complicated. The thing is that the laser “reacts” to the pigment in the hairs during hair removal – but if this pigment is located under the skin, it will remove it too, without trying to figure out whether it is under the skin or in the hairs! In the best case, the laser will simply cause discomfort. In more serious cases, burns are guaranteed, including quite severe ones – up to the appearance of blisters on the treated area. The laser, destroying the pigment, also spoils the tattoo itself!

That’s why most cosmetologists are categorical: laser and tattoo are incompatible!

How to get out of this situation?

A radical way is to remove the interfering tattoo. But only if you were going to do it! Don’t think that a hair removal laser will be able to remove a tattoo correctly – this must be done only on specialized equipment and undergo the entire rehabilitation period!

  1. The ideal way is to simply do hair removal. For example, the diode laser used in the network of “Smooth Body” studios is not sensitive to light and bright shades – therefore, a colored tattoo without dark tones especially black may not be an obstacle to hair removal at all. But such drawings are very rare, so be sure to consult with a specialist in the studio, who will immediately determine whether hair removal can be done on the area with a tattoo in your case.
  1. A popular method is to treat the entire area except for the area with the tattoo. Usually, for this, they retreat at least 2-3 mm from the tattoo, and many “especially dangerous” areas are masked with an opaque white pencil to eliminate any unpleasant sensations and consequences. The area in the tattoo area is best treated using the electrolysis method – one session will be enough to stop hair growth in this area forever. But it is also acceptable to use sugar paste, wax, depilatory cream, an epilator, or a regular razor!

Don’t worry that a tattoo or piercing will become an obstacle on the way to perfect skin without extra hair. The specialists of the “Smooth Body” studio will help you choose the right solution in each individual case and will make sure that even a large drawing in the treated area does not lead to negative consequences of hair removal because the safety of sessions and a positive result are our most important task!
